About Oxfam (& The Tiger Worms Project)

Oxfam is a global movement of people all working towards the same goal – an end to the injustice of poverty. Together we save and rebuild lives in disasters, help people earn a living, and speak out on the big issues, like inequality and climate change, that keep people poor. Oxfam has been working with the world’s poorest people for 75 years and operates in 90 countries.

Oxfam pioneers the development of new ways to provide safe and affordable water and sanitation to poor and vulnerable communities around the world. Oxfam started testing tiger worm toilets in 2013 in urban informal settlements in Liberia, where boggy ground and lack of space makes usual toilet options difficult. Tiger worm toilets use earthworms to accelerate the decomposition of human waste into natural fertilizer, ensuring the toilet can be used for longer and stopping germs from spreading. Some varieties of worm have stripy bodies, hence “Tiger”. Since 2013, Oxfam has installed them in Sierra Leone and adapted them for communal camps in Myanmar and Ethiopia. Fifty have just been installed for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, with the aim of building hundreds more.

Money raised from this GameSessions Giveaway will go to Oxfam’s Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Promotion (WaSH) Innovation Fund, which supports projects like our tiger worm toilets. The purpose of the fund is to trial affordable, appropriate and sustainable solutions for fragile areas prone to natural disaster and conflict. The Fund invests in new thinking to tackle the toughest challenges in providing safe water, sanitation and hygiene around the world.
